We arrived in Port St Joe and after a quick stop at the budget friendly Piggly Wiggly, we headed to camp.We spent the following days canoeing, sailing, fishing, and snorkeling in beautiful weather. The Barracuda patrol had some terrifying moments on the canoe trip-we forgot the forks and plates for our Ceasar salad. Luckily, Boy Scouts are always prepared and we had remembered to bring our fingers. Also, paddling up stream against the wind on the Apalachicola was a bit tough.
The menus for this High Adventure trip were outstanding and every boy got a turn at being cook for the day. The food was delicious and some of boys took the art of “slow food” to a new level. They are well on their way to earning cooking merit badges.
Other highlights of the trip were evening dips in the Gulf, a visit from a pair of rare Black Beaked Flamingoes, the Chuck Will’s Widow who sang to us all night, Armadillo, Osprey, Sting Ray and Dolphin sightings, the outdoor shower, teaching the boys traditional Scout songs like “You Shook Me All Night Long” by Sir Baden Powell (later covered by lesser know recording artists ACDC). I learned how to back up a canoe trailer, and that peace tree car air fresheners are an essential piece of equipment for all Scout trips, especially those involving fish and water. We have a great bunch of Scouts and Adult leaders and I can’t wait until next year!
